The default polite term for any woman on the street who looks older than you but younger than your lola. You use it to get her attention at the palengke ("Ale, pabili po!"), to ask for directions, or when she drops her pamaypay. It's the female equivalent of 'mama' or 'manong'.
A native Tagalog term of respect. Its exact origin is not definitively known, but it is a standard honorific.
