Before condos had service areas or laundry rooms, the old-school bahay kubo had a batalan. It's the open-air back porch, usually made of bamboo slats, where you'd wash dishes, do laundry, or even take a quick bath (using a tabo, of course). It's the original "wet kitchen."
Possibly from Spanish 'batalán' or a native term. Its usage is now mostly historical.
This term is archaic and mostly found in historical texts or descriptions of traditional Filipino houses.
