The foundation of Filipino bonding. It's the 'charot' at the end of a serious-sounding statement, the 'joke lang!' after a teasing comment. It can be a simple knock-knock, a witty one-liner, or the entire reason your tito is laughing by himself in the corner. If someone says, 'Huwag kang mapipikon, biro lang,' brace yourself.
Possibly from Malay 'biru' (confusion, disorder), which could have evolved to mean jest or trickery.
A very common word. The verb form is 'magbiro' (to joke) or 'biruin' (to joke with someone).
