The Visayan/Mindanao equivalent of the Luzon 'pare' or 'paps'. It's a term of endearment and casual respect between male friends. If someone calls you 'chong', you're in. It's the sound of brotherhood, usually followed by 'Tagay!' or 'Asa ta mangaon?' (Where are we eating?).
Possibly from Cebuano slang, or a shortened, affectionate term. Some sources link it to Chinese-Filipino influence.
