'Hanghang' is that kick you get from Bicol Express or the siling labuyo you bravely bit into. It's also the smell of a freshly opened bottle of patis or bagoong that makes your nose twitch. It's the flavor profile that makes you say 'Tubig, please!' but also 'Isa pa nga!'.
While it can mean pungent smell, it is far more commonly used to mean spicy/hot taste. 'Anghang' is the more common modern spelling and pronunciation for the spicy taste.
