FIL: Isang salitang pamalit o pantawag sa isang tao, bagay, lugar, o pangyayari na pansamantalang hindi maalala o ayaw tukuyin ang tiyak na pangalan.
EN: whatchamacallit
The ultimate Filipino filler word. It's our version of 'um,' 'uh,' 'like,' 'whatchamacallit,' and 'you-know-who' all rolled into one. Use it when your brain is buffering or when you're trying to talk about chismis without naming names. 'Si kuwan kasi... ayun, nakita ko kasama si kuwan!'
Origin uncertain. It functions as a universal placeholder in colloquial speech.
Extremely common in informal spoken Tagalog. Its meaning is entirely dependent on context and non-verbal cues. Sometimes spelled as 'kwan'.
🇵🇭 Pakikuha mo nga 'yung kuwan sa ibabaw ng mesa.
🇺🇸 Can you please get the whatchamacallit on the table?
🇵🇭 Nagkita kami ni kuwan kahapon sa mall.
🇺🇸 I saw so-and-so at the mall yesterday.
🇵🇭 Ang gagawin mo ay, kuwan, ihalo mo muna ang harina at asukal.
🇺🇸 What you'll do is, uhm, mix the flour and sugar first.
