The Pinoy version of a wake. It's a social gathering fueled by coffee, biscuits, endless rounds of card games (tong-its, pusoy dos), and a whole lot of chismis to keep everyone awake. It's a sad occasion, but it's also a testament to Filipino community, where you literally stay up with the grieving family so they're not alone.
Also can be used more generally to mean 'staying up all night' for a purpose (e.g., to study, to work), but its primary meaning is a funeral wake. When used for other purposes, it's often phrased as 'maglamay'.
🇺🇸 We are going to the wake of Marco's grandmother tonight.
🇺🇸 I need to pull an all-nighter (lit. hold a vigil) to finish my thesis.
