EN: to act as a midwife; to deliver a baby
This is the OG frontliner role. Before hospitals became the norm, there was the 'hilot' or 'kumadrona' in the barrio who would `magpaanak`. It's the high-stakes, high-pressure job of welcoming a new human into the world, usually with just hot water, towels, and a whole lot of skill and prayer.
From `magpa-` (causative prefix) + `anak` (child). Literally, 'to cause to child' or 'to cause to be born'.
Refers to the person assisting the birth (midwife, doctor), not the mother giving birth. The mother 'nanganak' or 'nanganganak'.
🇺🇸 Her grandmother was a well-known traditional midwife who delivers babies in their village.
🇺🇸 They went to the hospital to have a doctor deliver the baby.
