Before we called them 'piloto,' this was the cool term. A 'manlilipad' is literally a 'flier.' It has a slightly old-school, adventurous vibe, like someone from a black-and-white movie with goggles and a scarf. Today, you might use it more poetically to describe a bird, a kite, or even your dreams taking flight (charot!).
