Before welders, there was the 'panday'. This is the OG craftsman, the guy who could turn a useless chunk of metal into a deadly 'itak' or a sturdy 'araro'. Today, the most famous one is Flavio, aka Ang Panday, who's basically the Filipino Thor, but his hammer is for forging swords, not summoning lightning.
Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *panday ('skilled person, craftsman').
Can be used more broadly to mean any skilled craftsman or artisan, but its primary meaning is a blacksmith.
🇺🇸 I had a new bolo knife made by a famous blacksmith in our town.
🇺🇸 The craftsmanship of the grille is excellent, as if a true artisan made it.
