The official footwear of the Filipino household. The weapon of choice for mothers chasing naughty kids (the dreaded 'flying sinelas'). It's what you wear for a quick trip to the sari-sari store. Not to be confused with its more common cousin 'tsinelas', 'sinelas' is the Spanish-derived version. Same comfort, different colonial origin story.
From Spanish 'chinela' (slipper).
Often used interchangeably with 'tsinelas', though 'tsinelas' is far more common in colloquial speech. 'Sinelas' can sound slightly more formal, literary, or old-fashioned.
🇺🇸 Wear slippers inside the house so your feet don't get dirty.
🇺🇸 I left my favorite pair of flip-flops at the beach.
