The smell that causes panic in a Filipino household. It's that distinct, slightly-burnt aroma of rice (sinaing) that stuck to the bottom of the pot because someone forgot to turn off the stove or add enough water. It's the smell of "Ay, sunog ang kanin!" followed by a frantic scraping of the pot. Some people secretly like the crispy, burnt part (tutong), though.
Primarily used to describe burnt rice, but can be extended to other scorched foods.
